ABOUT
Ekukhanyeni
Relief Project, a community service organization created in 2003,
became a registered Section 21 (not-for-profit) organization in
2005. Pilot programmes are operational in Lawley and Finetown, informal
settlements forming part of the City of Johannesburg’s Region
G.
Ekukhanyeni
seeks to contribute to community-owned sustainable development and
poverty alleviation through various programmes and income generating
projects. Its purpose is to improve the capacity of the communities
to achieve and sustain food and nutrition security and to provide
effective early childhood care and education services to its beneficiary
children and their adult support network in an integrated and holistic
manner. Activities such as the development of permaculture food
gardens and skills are implemented in conjunction with the local
communities and its structures using a cooperative and collaborative
support network.
Our
target beneficiaries are 600 orphans and impoverished children and
their adult care-givers operating in the Early Childhood Development
(ECD) Centers or commonly referred to as "backroom crèches".
We
are inspired by the ethos of “Each One, Teach One” as
we attempt to strengthen communities in a bottom-up approach. This
also underlines our fundamental belief in the importance of community
buy-in and participation.
